I understand your frustration with USA Rugby, and while I can't really speak for them, I can certainly share my experiences with recruitment, financing, and coaching.

Recruitment is truly a year-round effort that needs a person dedicated to the task. Using the web (your college website, Facebook, Twitter etc) in combination with events (meet-ups, socials, match days, parties etc) gets great exposure. Don't forgot about the same ways that you heard about the team (posters? word of mouth? Craigslist?) as they attracted you and can do the same for others.

Financing a season is expensive. Creative fundraising can go a long way in staving off hard times. At my old team in DC (Washington Renegades), we regularly held yard sales, volunteered at community events (for tips), and sold club merchandise. At the Village Lions in NYC, the women's team produces and sells an annual calendar featuring players. It's worth bearing in mind that the more often you can get out into the community, the more you raise your team's visibility, which in turn attracts more players.

As a coach moving to a new city, I was lost at first as to where to find a new team. Fortunately, the local union (MetNY) not only posted coaching positions but were helpful in putting me in touch with the right people. Your local unions are there to help - put them to good use.

This is great, but as a college student currently with a team, my question is how to build your team to be an attractive choice for these students.

I have played with the University of Northern Colorado for five years and I feel that USA rugby could do more to help clubs maintain and find coaches. I feel like teams that hit hardships get left in the dust as they continue to pay out participation dues to the organization.

Any thoughts? I'd love to hear other opinions on this issue or what other teams have done to find coaches and recruit players.
